I blinked.

Or at least I thought so.

As I opened my eyes, I discovered I had done more than blink. I had nearly fallen asleep. And my car was now in the grass median.

Acting on instinct, I yanked the wheel of my diesel Mercedes-Benz and careened across the highway doing 70 miles per hour.

I then yanked the wheel in the opposite direction. Damn. Overcorrected again.

I can't remember how many times I fishtailed until the rear wheels caught in the dirt and sent my car airborne.

The roof of my car landed first, crumpling it like a pop can.

Then my car literally bounced over and landed on its wheels, cat-like.

I briefly took stock of my injuries. Not feeling anything severe, I opened my car door and walked up the embankment to an off-duty police officer who had been four cars behind me and was witness to the accident.

I tapped on his window.

"I think there's been an accident," I said.

"I see that."

"What do we do now?"

"I've already called for help," the officer said. He handed me a pile of napkins. "Here. Put these on your head."

Fortunately, I had not been injured badly. A quick trip the hospital showed that my biggest injury was a gash in my head. I literally lost part of my scalp and the chunk of hair connected to it.

But the accident wasn't without its psychological impact.

I had to wonder: "Why had I been allowed to live when so many others had died in similar accidents? Why had I survived?"
